Specialization Certificate:

Specialization Certificate:
For Candidates holding 16 YEAR OF EDUCATION IN ANY DISCIPLINE
This program has been designed for graduates having 16 year of education in any discipline and intends to sharpen skills and enhance educational, academic and professional qualifications while minimizing the costs of their studies. This will also broaden a student’s knowledge and increase career opportunities available in rapidly changing and competitive business environment. Following are the areas of Specialization Certificate:

1. Banking
2. Finance
3. Human Resource Management
4. Management
5. Management Information System, and
6. Marketing


Eligibility for Admission:

Candidate must have completed atleast 16-year of education in any discipline from a recognized university/Institution.

Terms and Conditions:
1. Candidate can apply for admission in one area of a Specialization Certificate at the time of University admission session (spring/fall semester). Areas of Specialization Certificate and their courses are listed in APPENDIX-A.
2. Candidate has to qualify at least 12 credit hours required for Specialization Certificate.
3. No course exemption is allowed for Specialization Certificate.
4. Candidate can not enroll simultaneously in more than one Specialization Certificate.
5. The duration of the program for Specialization Certificate shall not be less than one semester or more than three semesters.

Award of Specialization Certificate:

1. Specialization Certificate showing the courses of respective area of specialization, grade and Grade point average will be issued by the University upon successful completion of the requirements.

2. In case a candidate fails to qualify the specialization certificate then he/she has to withdraw from the original program in order to seek admission for another specialization.

3. Incomplete Transcript or a course certificate on the prescribed fee will be issued to a student in case he/she does not pass all required courses of the respective specialization certificate.

Admission requiremnts

A candidate seeking admission to a Diploma, Bachelor or Masters program (MBA, MCS, MIT) having passed the prescribed examination but not having achieved the requisite percentage of marks as defined by the University’s regulations are required to enroll in a Zero Semester (Fall/Spring) and achieve the required semester GPA in order to become eligible for applying for admission into the respective study program.

The Zero Semester comprises of the following courses:
a. MTH 001: Elementary Mathematics (Click Here for Details)
b. ENG 001: Elementary English (Click Here for Details)
c. CS 001: Computer Proficiency (Click Here for Details)

The courses and their number may be changed from time to time by the University.
The candidate will be required to pass all prescribed courses in a single semester and achieve a semester GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4 in order to become eligible to apply for admission into the desired study program.
Students enrolled in the Zero Semester will be bound to obey the rules and regulations of the University.
Zero Semester, once qualified will remain valid for all subsequent admissions.

a) Ist Installment: Rs. 3000/- payable at the time of admission.

NOTE: The fees will be deposited in the authorized bank branches by the date announced. If the candidate once offered a Zero Semester and deposit university dues and subsequently leaves the university under any circumstances, the university dues already deposited by him/her shall not be refunded in any case. Refund of tuition fee and other dues can be made to a student only if the University considers the student to be ineligible for the Zero Semester.

ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL SHORT CERTIFICATE COURSE(S)

ADMISSION TO PROFESSIONAL SHORT CERTIFICATE COURSE(S)

The Virtual University has introduced Certificate Course(s) for professionals working in the industry as well as for the public at large. The purpose of these is to retrain professionals in new emerging areas of Science & Technology as well as provide the public with an opportunity to learn basic subjects which may be of general interest. Certificate Courses are offered in five disciplines: Computer Science, General Science, Humanities, Management and Mathematics.

DURATION:

Each Certificate Course comprised of one semester duration (18 weeks).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate can read, write and understand English language and there is no restriction on age, sex and educational qualifications. Candidate can apply for admission to maximum four (04) courses during a semester. However, students already enrolled in a Virtual University degree/diploma program are ineligible for admission towards certificate course(s).
EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL:
The University mail a package of educational material comprised of VU Info pack, Lecture handout, Lecture DVD’s to the admitted candidate. A student is allowed to change his/her enrolled certificate course within fifteen days after the commencement of semester by providing application (signed hard copy ) to Registrar, Virtual University of Pakistan, M.A Jinnah Campus, Defence Road, Off Raiwind Road, Lahore, Pakistan or at (certificateadmissions@vu.edu.pk). Such student is required to replace the received package (if already received) by mailing Lecture Handouts & Lecture DVD’s of the course along with payment of Rs.100/- as shipment charges to VU Bookshop (bookshop@vu.edu.pk) in order to receive new opted course material. However, overseas students are required to pay actual additional shipment charges for newly opted course.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDY PROGRESS:
The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, online quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term examinations.
AWARD OF CERIFICATE:
Each Certificate Course is of three credit hours (except Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies). The earned course credit hours are transferable towards degree/diploma program of the University. Course Certificate would be awarded by VU Academic Department (academics@vu.edu.pk) to the candidate after successful completion of course work requirements.

The Virtual University of Pakistan is offering following diploma programs:

(b) Diploma in Computer Science and Information Technology


(a) PGD Business Admin (POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION)
Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration equips the students and in-service employees to meet the challenges and opportunities of the corporate world. The main focus of the program is to provide management-cum-computer education to in-service employees and interested students. It strengthens the management and leadership capabilities of students. The program provides balanced coverage of the various aspects of Business and Management that will allow the diploma holders to meet the challenge of today's technology. Candidates after obtaining diploma can continue Master of Business Administration Program of the university.

DURATION:
It is a one-year duration program that comprises of two semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors’ degree from a recognized university/institute in any discipline with at least 45 percent marks. Candidate having less than 45 percent marks is firstly required to qualify Zero semester.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDY PROGRESS:

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term exams. The mid-term and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

AWARD OF DIPLOMA:
To be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration students are required to complete course work program (minimum two semesters) of at least 36 credit hour’s course work with minimum CGPA 2.00 out of 4.


Course Exemption: No course exemption is allowed.

(b) DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The Department of Computer Science offers Diploma in Computer Science and Information Technology. This program has been designed to develop skills in information acquisition, processing, handling, retrieval and presentation. It provides balanced coverage of the various aspects of Computer Science and Information Technology and covers theory and practical experience that will allow the diploma holders to meet the challenge of today's technology. It acts as a conversion course and is intended for those who want to become computer professionals.
DURATION:
It is a one year duration program that comprises of two semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants for admission to Diploma in Computer Science & Information Technology must have passed with at least 45% marks, Intermediate (Part I and II, or equivalent examination), or I.Com or ICS or DAE or ‘A’ level examinations or a valid Bachelor’s degree. Candidate having less than 45 percent marks is firstly required to qualify Zero semester.
“The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) ‘O’ levels and School Certificate (SC) examinations are considered equivalent to Matriculation, and the GCE ‘A’ levels is considered equivalent to the Intermediate examination. For the GCSE (‘O’) and SC examinations, grades in 06 subjects are considered. ‘A’ level candidates must have passed 3 subjects and required to provide equivalence from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC), Islamabad”.

MATHEMATICS DEFICIENCY COURSE:
Candidates without knowledge of Mathematics will be considered for admission but are required to take an additional ‘Deficiency Course’ during their first semester. However, candidates already qualified Mathematics at Intermediate or Bachelor level would be exempted from Mathematics Deficiency Course.

2-YEAR BACHELORS PROGRAMS

2-YEAR BACHELORS PROGRAMS
These programs have been specially designed to provide an opportunity for students to obtain a 2-Year Bachelors degree for early entry into the job market, in order to gain practical experience. They may then return and continue seamlessly into their respective 4-year programs at a later stage. After successful completion of their first four semesters, students may apply for the 2-Year degree or continue with the 4-year BS program. These programs provide an opportunity to qualify for a 2-Year Bachelors degree in the following subjects:

BA (Mass Communication)
BA (Bachelor of Arts)


Duration:

It is 2-Year full time study program spread over four semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations.



Eligibility Requirements:



Applicants for admission to all Bachelor of Science (BS) Programs must have passed with at least 45% marks, Intermediate (Part I and II, or equivalent examination), or I.Com or ICS or DAE or ‘A’ level examinations. The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) ‘O’ levels and School Certificate (SC) examinations are considered equivalent to Matriculation, and the GCE ‘A’ levels is considered equivalent to the Intermediate examination. To be eligible for the award of 2-Year Bachelors degree, the students are required to complete 60 credit hours with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 out of 4.00. The students after obtaining 2-Year degree can complete their 4-Year BS degree requirements at any time by successfully completing remaining minimum 72 credit hours in at least four semesters.



Course of Study:

The courses are listed in a semester wise breakup. The courses may be revised from time to time as a result of continuous review conducted every term to bring them at par with courses being taught at top-class foreign universities. While reviewing the courses, needs of local industry and job market are also given full consideration.

After successful completion of two-year BA, student has an option to continue 4-Year BS in Commerce or BS in Psychology or BS in Mass Communication or BS in Computer Science by taking remaining credit hours in at least 4-semesters.

The schedule for the payment of dues will be notified at the start of each semester. The fees will be deposited in the authorized bank branches by the date announced. If the candidate, once offered admission in a degree program, enrolls himself/herself by depositing university dues and subsequently leaves the university under any circumstances, the university dues already deposited by him shall not be refunded (except security fee under rules) in any case. Refund of tuition fee and other dues can be made to a student only if the University considers the student to be ineligible for the enrollment in a semester

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (4-year) Programs
The Bachelor of Science (BS) program prepares a student to meet the demanding challenges of the modern workplace. The BS degree comprises more than 130 credits of work. During final year, student will be required to spend a good deal of time in completing a project. This project will usually be done in collaboration with industry, under the guidance of a professional nominated by the University. The curriculum for various majors is based on the recommendations of the National Curriculum Revision Committees approved by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad. However, the Academic Council of the University may update the curricula from time to time. Please note that all courses detailed in the BS programs below may not be offered in a given academic session. The specific courses being offered will be notified in the semester schedule on the University Learning Management System web site.

Duration:
It is four-year full time study program spread over eight semesters. Each semester has at least 18 weeks duration for teaching and examinations etc.

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants for admission to all Bachelor of Science (BS) Programs must have passed with at least 45% marks, Intermediate (Part I and II, or equivalent examination), or I.Com or ICS or DAE or ‘A’ level examinations. The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) ‘O’ levels and School Certificate (SC) examinations are considered equivalent to Matriculation, and the GCE ‘A’ levels is considered equivalent to the Intermediate examination. For the GCSE (‘O’) and SC examinations, grades in 6 subjects are considered. ‘A’ level candidates must have passed 3 subjects and required to provide equivalence from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC), Islamabad.
Admission application forms are same for 2-year and 4-year bachelor degree programs.
Note: candidates having less than 45 % in their intermediate or equivalent examination from a recognized institute are eligible to apply for BS provided they firstly qualify Mathematics, Computer Proficiency, and English courses in a single semester (called “Zero semester”) and achieve a semester GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4. Fee for the Zero semester within Pakistan is Rs 6,000/- payable in two equal installments. Fee (1st fee installment) payable at the time of admission is Rs. 3,000/-. However, fee for the Zero semester for Pakistani students abroad is US $ 250. Such student would be responsible to pay additionally cost of Lecture CDs/DVD’s, Lecture Handouts plus shipment cost.
Assessment of Study Progress:
The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Moderated Discussion Boards (GMDBs), mid-term and final term exams. The mid-term and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

Award of Degree:
To be eligible for the award of four-year BS degree, the students are required to complete at least 132 credit hours with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.25 out of 4.00.

The scheme of studies for BS program is outlined as under. The courses may be revised from time to time as a result of continuous review to bring them at par with courses being taught at top-class foreign universities. While reviewing the courses needs of local industry and job market are also given full consideration.

Project
Students are required to complete a project of 6 credit hours in the final year of their BS degree program. The choice of the final project is at the student’s discretion. However, consultation with the student advisor is compulsory. Students have to submit a detailed write-up of the project and in some cases may be required to give a presentation.

BS (Psychology)
Psychology is the science of behavior and the mind. In the B.S. program, the study of psychology provides an understanding of basic processes of sensation, perception, learning, cognition, development, and personality along with principles of social psychology, clinical psychology, and behavioral neuroscience. Knowledge of psychological principles and of scientific methods for evaluating theories and research in the social sciences is essential in our rapidly changing society. The basic goal of the B.S. program is to integrate the scientific foundation of psychology with a strong humanities background along with basic science to better prepare students for advanced training in psychology, medicine, cognitive science, neuroscience, and other related disciplines. Tuition fee rates are fixed and are independent of the number of courses being taught in one semester. Security, Admission and Registration fee are charged once at the start of the first semester. These programs comprise 72 credit hours each, spread over 4 semesters and allow graduates to upgrade their skill sets into the requirements of the modern knowledge era. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE Apply Online
Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science is a research based degree program being offered by Department of Computer Science at Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Sialkot. The program is designed to produce academicians and professionals of high quality throughout the country. Course work designed for MS in Computer Science provides a breadth based knowledge of the field whereas the specialization equips the students with in-depth knowledge of a specific area of computer science.

Duration
It is a two-year duration program spread over four semesters. Each semester has 18 weeks duration.

Eligibility Requirements
16-year education i.e., BS in Computer Science/ BS in Information Technology/ Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons)/ Master of Computer Science/ Master of Information Technology/ M.Sc (Computer Science) from a recognized institution. Candidate must have at least CGPA 2.50 out of 4.00 or first division. Each candidate is required to pass the NTS – GAT-General test.
